PAINT IT BLACK
Dan Yemin may not quite be an “elder statesmen” of punk, but his impact on it throughout the past 15 years certainly approaches Mt. Rushmore status.
After establishing a melodic edge to the precedings with Lifetime and Kid Dynamite, Yemin has finally “stepped to the mic” with Paint it Black. Conveying the intensely personal (try a brush with death) as well as the overtly political (war, chemical dependency and "womb envy"), Yemin, guitarist Josh Agran, bassist Andy Nelson and Philly's busiest drummer Jared Shavelson, continue to leave room for the threatening urgency of a beautifully writ “fuck you” song. Drawing on traditionally aggro forebears like Minor Threat, musical innovators like Swiz and the cold-stare lyricism of hip hop, Paint it Black is a mixed-bag success story worthy of its pedigree.
Following three of the best hardcore full-lengths of this decade and still getting stronger (which is a frightening concept), Paint It Black recently announced their plan to release a few EP’s rather than record a follow-up LP to 2008’s stunning New Lexicon. Label manager Karl Hensel stated, “If you want to talk about second-guessing ourselves, [B9 owner] Chris and I always talk about how much we want to go back in time and do the vinyl for New Lexicon. At the time, we weren’t able to do it, so to be able to work with the band on this EP-it’s something we’re really excited to do and it’s been a long-time coming.”
The band will be entering God City studios to record with engineer Kurt Ballou. Slated for release in June 2009, the as-yet-untitled EP, according to frontman and modern philosopher Dan Yemin, “[This] is our fiercest shit to date. Except one song sounds like Fugazi having a three-way with Jawbreaker and Nirvana.”
